It’s been a while since I’ve been truly excited for a French series to come out, but while scrolling through the “Coming Soon” suggestions on Netflix a week or so ago, I spied the trailer to LUPIN. If you’re like me, and did not grow up French, the character of Arsène Lupin was unfamiliar to me, but my husband was obsessed with the Lupin stories as a child, tales of a gentleman thief and master of disguise. (For me, the appeal was the brilliant and utterly charismatic Omar Sy, who I’d come to know thanks to my favorite contemporary film of all time, Les Intouchables.)
This iteration, a series from Netflix, was adapted from the original books, written in 1905. This is the first time a Black actor will be playing the lead, and I am looking forward to seeing how Sy, who has a broad, mischievous grin and infectious laugh, portrays this wily and charming character. Mark your calendars for January 8, the release date for the series, and if you haven’t yet, check out the trailer below!
